You’ve probably heard of acupuncture before, but how about its lesser-known cousin, acupressure? While both acupuncture and acupressure are used to stimulate acupoints (also known as meridians), there are key differences in how these therapies work. Read on to find out more!
An introduction to acupuncture and acupressure
Both acupuncture and acupressure are key therapies utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which states that our bodies are entities balanced out by opposing forces – the Yin and the Yang. According to the theories of TCM, one can only experience good health when there is an adequate flow of energy, or qi, through meridian pathways. What acupuncture and acupressure do is to restore the flow of qi, and to ensure that the Yin and the Yang are balanced equally.
Both acupuncture and acupressure are said to stimulate endorphins, resulting in increased blood flow and oxygen, relaxed muscles, and faster healing. Acupuncture and acupressure also help in reducing stress and tension.
How do acupuncture and acupressure work?
The puncture of a needle (in acupuncture) and the specific pressure applied (in acupressure) is perceived by your body to be an injury – resulting in your body drawing blood and nutrients to the puncture point, or point of pressure. These points are also the points at which your nerves are clustered, and when extra blood is present, it helps to heal inflamed or misfiring nerves.
What is the difference between acupuncture and acupressure?
Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles to stimulate your meridians, and acupressure uses firm pressure and massage to do the same. There are those who claim that acupressure is easier to master than acupuncture, and that it can be easily performed at home. However, it should be noted that using needles (such as in acupuncture) can help to release blockages more easily – because massage (which is used in acupressure) isn’t as deeply penetrating, it does require a highly skilled individual to be able to administer acupressure in a manner that is effective and beneficial.
Is acupuncture or acupressure better for me?
In most cases, acupuncture and acupressure can be used interchangeably. Those who are squeamish around needles might be more comfortable with acupressure.
How does acupressure and acupuncture help with fertility?
Acupuncture and acupressure for fertility typically addresses the Ki 16 – this is a specific meridian that stimulates circulation, energy and blood flow to your kidneys, as well as your reproductive organs. By puncturing or applying pressure on your Ki 16, you’ll be releasing toxins in the specified organs, and reducing both pelvic congestion and inflammation. As nutrient and oxygen rich blood rushes to your reproductive organs, this will result in better reproductive tissue health, making it easier for you to conceive.
