Should you buy pregnancy insurance when you’re conceiving?

Singaporeans are a kiasu bunch, and for ladies who are pregnant and waiting to conceive, you probably have a million questions running through your mind. What if the pregnancy doesn’t go well? What if your baby is premature? What if your baby has a birth defect or disease?

If you’ve always been the type to worry about things, then it’s easy to let your imagination run wild, and plunge head-first into a never-ending spiral. Here’s some good news: for couples who want to have ultimate peace of mind, there’s always the option of purchasing pregnancy insurance. In this article, we tell you all you need to know about this type of insurance, so that you can decide if it’s a good fit for you!

Purchasing insurance before you get pregnant

The vast majority of insurance companies have policies which are catered to women who are intending to get pregnant, but have not done so yet. These policies cover miscarriage, emergency C-sections, premature births, birth defects, and more.

Here’s the rationale behind purchasing such insurance: if you encounter these complications during your pregnancy, you’ll probably have to be hospitalized for quite some time while the doctors tend to you. This means your hospital bills will be through the roof – and you’ll probably have to fork out extra on top of what your Medisave covers. Under such circumstances, an insurance policy can help ease your financial burden.

Sounds like a good deal? There’s a caveat, though – most insurance companies will require you to purchase their plans for a substantial amount of the time (we’re talking 10 months or so) before you get pregnant. This means you’ll really have to sit down with your partner and do some family planning, before you can move ahead and purchase your insurance. If you’re keen to buy this sort of insurance, it’s time to get your ducks in a row!

Purchasing insurance after you get pregnant

If you’re already with child, but you would still like some sort of safety net, there are also insurance policies that cater to women who are pregnant. These insurance policies cover pregnancy complications, and the vast majority of them also provide protection against various illnesses for the baby. AXA’s Mum’s Advantage Plan, for example, covers 18 congenital illnesses; AIA’s Mum2Baby plan, on the other hand covers 23 congenital illnesses.

Should you purchase pregnancy insurance?

Pregnancy insurance is by no means a must-have, but it’s a nice bonus for expectant mothers. This is especially the case for those who are conceiving at a more mature age, and are hence more susceptible to complications.

Cost-wise, there’s a whole range of insurance policies that you may purchase while you’re pregnant – some affordable, some expensive. But as for prenatal plans, the bulk of these are priced at less than S$1000. If this is something that you can comfortably afford, and it gives you peace of mind, then there’s no harm in going ahead and purchasing a plan.

Alternatively, the insurance policies which you purchase only when you’re pregnant do come with unique benefits as well. Most of these plans allow the mother to transfer the coverage to their child (without any medical checkups being done prior). This means that your child will be covered right off the bat!
