The law of attraction: how visualization can help you get pregnant

adrianypc

When hearing about the law of attraction, many people are quick to dismiss it as “hippie nonsense” or “new age mumbo jumbo”. But the truth is that the law of attraction can be explained by science – and it’s been used by many, including Olympic athletes, to great success. How does the law of attraction work, exactly? Read on to find out!

What is the law of attraction?

The law of attraction essentially states that we attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on. This is based on the key tenet that people and their thoughts are made up of energy, and by choosing to place emphasis on positive energy and positive thoughts, people are able to bring about positive outcomes in their lives. Conversely, dwelling on negative thoughts blocks the flow of well being to the individual, creating a vicious cycle of negativity if unchecked.

What has visualization got to do with the law of attraction?

Visualization is central to the idea of “focus” in the law of attraction. For example, if you want to do well at a presentation at work, it isn’t enough to simply say “I want to do well at my presentation”. Instead, you need to engage in visualization, and imagine the situation playing out. For instance – imagine yourself walking into the room confidently, taking control of the situation, giving a seamless presentation, taking questions from the floor and answering them knowledgeably. It’s also important to conjure up the relevant emotions when you’re imagining the scenario happening, and to internalize these as best you can.

How does visualization work?

According to Srinivasan Pillay, a Harvard M.D. and author of Your Brain and Business: The Neuroscience of Great Leaders, visualizing an action helps us stimulate the very same brain regions that are active when we perform that action.

What does this mean? Visualization acts as a form of conditioning; by using visualization techniques, you’re preparing your brain for the actual scenario. If you do this often enough, your brain will start to unconsciously hone in and focus on this activity or scenario even when you’re not actively thinking about it, and guide you towards achieving your goal.

Visualization has had measurable impacts on notable figures from many different fields – including athletes. In particular, a study which was done with four group of Olympic athletes (each using a different combination of physical training and visualization techniques) showed that the group with the least amount of physical training, and the most amount of visualization training performed the best during the Olympics. Following this study, the US Olympic Committee added five more full-time psychologists to their team, in a bid to increase their focus on visualization exercises in their athletes’ training routine.

How can visualization help with conceiving?

Many couples who have been trying to conceive for a certain period of time feel weary and beaten-down. Even though they’re actively trying to get pregnant, they may be “hedging” internally, and sub-consciously or unconsciously telling themselves that their chances are low, and that they’re not sure if this will happen after all.

Trying to get pregnant can be a gruelling process – so it’s completely normal to feel uncertain about it. What visualization can do, however, is to help assuage feelings of insecurity, fear, or even hopelessness, and to equip couples with an optimistic attitude and spirit. With visualization, couples can learn to cultivate and embrace the positive, nurturing spirit that is essential for bringing a baby into this world.
